The Member of Parliament for Daboya-Mankarigu has called for the removal of the requirement for assembly members to vote in the approval of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He argues that the current system politicizes local governance and hampers effective leadership, advocating instead for a more streamlined and merit-based appointment process.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Daboya-Mankarigu Constituency in the Savannah Region of Ghana, and chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Mahama Shaibu, has hinted that the current system of Assembly members voting to approve Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) nominees will soon be scrapped.
According to him, Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee is working around the clock to finalise a bill that will allow the general public in various districts to directly elect their MMDCEs.
The Daboya-Mankarigu lawmaker explained that ongoing voting by Assembly Members to confirm or approve the President’s nominees for the position of MMDCEs at the various districts will mark the last time assembly members will be sole deciders of the approval process.
Mr. Mahama made gave the hint during the confirmation of the North Gonja District Chief Executive, Mr. Abdulai Nashiru, who obtained 100 per cent (100%) endorsement from both the assembly members and government appointees.
“The Regional Minister was very charitable when he said this may be the last time we will endorse a DCE. Today, I can say on authority as the chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament that this will be the last time that we will endorse the DCE.
Indeed, in the next round, we would elect DCEs just as we elect Members of Parliament. Let me affirm to you that there is a knock on my table in that regard,” he reiterated.
