NCA Drives Ghana’s Digital Future with 5G, Satellite Broadband, and DAB

The NCA advances Ghana’s digital future with 5G, satellite broadband, and DAB, enhancing connectivity, innovation, and access to modern communication tools.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) continues to drive innovation in Ghana’s communications industry through advancements in 5G services, satellite broadband, and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).

These initiatives, the Authority said, reflect its commitment to bridging connectivity gaps and transforming the country’s digital infrastructure.

The NCA has licensed Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC) to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana, positioning the nation for full digitalization by 2030. NGIC, as the sole wholesale 5G licensee, will provide an open-access platform for mobile network operators and collaborate with tower companies nationwide.

With faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability, 5G is expected to support advanced applications like enhanced mobile broadband and ultra-reliable low-latency communication, driving economic growth while fostering innovation across industries.

In addition to 5G, the NCA has also licensed SpaceX Starlink GH Ltd. to provide satellite broadband services under the Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) Service Licence. This measure aims to address internet disruptions and ensure connectivity in underserved and remote areas.

The initiative will advance Ghana’s digitalization agenda by delivering high-speed internet to communities previously excluded from such services.

Moreover, the introduction of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) marks another significant milestone for Ghana. The DAB+ trial, launched on August 22, 2023, by the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, includes two transmitter sites in Accra and Kumasi.

These sites broadcast 18 radio stations, 11 in Accra and 7 in Kumasi, offering listeners high-quality digital audio experiences. To facilitate public access, the NCA distributed 1,100 DAB+ receivers to stakeholders in these cities.
